Choosing Baby Names
by Jenna S.

Choosing a name for a baby can be a time consuming and daunting task for any new mother and father. We all know that a name is very significant in today's world as people are first judged by outward appearances. We want our kids to become unique, confident, powerful, and successful, and we do not want their names to hinder the process.

Of course, we all want the best for our children, and that includes a name that will portray all of the traits we want them to have.

Here are a few things to think about when choosing a name for your baby:

1. Do not get caught up in choosing a baby name that is so different than everyone else.

Sometimes, as mothers we are trying to help our children, but are really only hurting them in the long run. A unique name can be beautiful for a child, but a name that is too unusual might get them into trouble. You know how brutal kids can be when they are growing up. It is just something to think about.

2. It's OK to be struggling to find baby names. Do not feel guilty about this.

Mothers, especially new, can sometimes feel guilty that they have not chosen a name for their new baby. Looking around it may seem like a lot of people have already known the name of their baby, even before they became pregnant. Let me assure you, this is not the case with the majority. It is perfectly OK to be indecisive. This is a major decision and you want to make sure you get it right.

3. Try not to feel pressured to name your baby after a family member if that is not the name you want for your new baby.

As a parent, that new baby is your responsibility, so you have the last say on a name. If you want to go with a family name out of respect, it is understood. However, if it is haunting you day and night, go with your gut...you and your baby will be happier in the long run.

4. Ask for suggestions from other people

There is strength and wisdom in numbers. Ask your friends, neighbours, and co-workers for any suggestions. Send out a mass email or start a baby naming game with your co-workers and award them with a free lunch if you pick their name. Get creative. Then maybe choosing a name for your baby will be more fun and interesting rather than a daunting task.

5. Now, it is time to relax

Mothers may face a lot of stress with pregnancy and parenting, especially if this new baby is not your first. Take a deep breath, relax, and try to enjoy the entire experience. You will only go this way once. Try not to worry about how your baby's name will affect them throughout their lives. Yes, it may affect them, but the love and adoration you will have for your child will outweigh any negative attention. So, try and focus on giving that new baby all of the love and attention it deserves.

Unconditional love from a parent will tell your child that there is nothing they cannot accomplish, or no barrier they cannot overcome, and no name can compete with that!
